Feng Shui for the Conference Room

Things can happen fast in meetings, or they can drone on for hours will little progress or inspiration. If you want to use every trick available to get ahead, make sure you get a spot at the table that has no negative or stagnant chi.

Where to sit in a conference room

1) Sit where you can see the door. It also helps if you can sit a bit away from the door. Sitting where you can see the door tends to make people feel more comfortable, and feng shui is all about feeling at ease.

2) Don’t sit with a sharp corner pointing at you, whether its a desk or the corner of a wall. Sharp corners give off cutting chi and literally put you in a bad space. Your ability to think clearly, and to just think, will be compromised. This applies to all corners in office spaces – improve your office feng shui by avoiding cutting chi.

3) Don’t bring clutter with you. Take only as much to the meeting as you absolutely need. Sitting down with messy stacks of files will block and stall the chi around you. Incidentally, it will also make you look a bit out of control to your co-workers.

4) If you want to be in a position of leadership, sit in the northwest corner of the room facing south-east. This is a good spot for organization and planning ahead, too. You’ll command more authority, respect and responsibility by sitting in the northwest corner. In feng shui, the northwest is characterized by the father or oldest man, so you’ll benefit from all those traditional stereotypes just by sitting in his place. This seating position is escpecially powerful in the late evening or at dusk.

5) If you want to improve communication, sit in the south-east corner facing north-west. If you sit here in the mid morning in mid-summer, you’ll be particularly good at getting your ideas across. IF you seek harmonious progress and long-term relationships the south-east corner is a good choice, too.

6) If you want to get people excited and motivated about something, sit south facing north. You’ll be in the Five element Fire spot, characterized by the middle daughter and passion, excitement and heat. The most powerful time of day to sit in the south is at noon or midday.

7) If your enthusiasm needs a boost, sit in the north-east corner facing south-west. This is improves motivation as well as practicality and caution. It can also help if your pie-in-the-sky grand views need to be brought back down to earth (northeast is the soil direction in the Five Elements). You can create deeper relationships from this spot as well.

8) Sitting south-west facing north-east is a good spot for resolving conflicts. It is also motivating and supports hard work. If you need a new direction on a work project, sit here during the meeting.

9) If you want to be on the quiet and still side, sit on the north side of the conference table.

10) If you have a choice, sit in sunlight rather than under flourescent lighting. Natural sunlight has lots of flowing chi energy. It also reduces eye-strain and has been shown to keep people more alert and positive. Of course, don’t sit under a blaze of southern sun – unless wearing sunglasses will improve your image with your co-workers.

The larger Emergency Medicine Conference is announced months before the event and is held in an arena with a locale that is favorable for most emergency physicians to travel to. The conference depends on a large turnout to ensure success and is usually supported by sponsors from large companies that cater to emergency medicine needs, as well as keynote speakers from all over the world and vendors who show their wares that relate to emergency medicine. Usually exhibitors will have the latest technology in medical devices based on emergency medical products. The exhibitor will showcase product and literature as to how the product can effectively enhance the emergency physician’s practice. The Emergency Medicine Conference will also add special events throughout the conference in order to entertain the physicians and, in some cases, show of the attractions of the city the conference is being held in. Special events can include an opening dinner, several cocktail parties and a golf tournament, as wells as special organized tours of the surrounding area.

The Emergency Medicine Conference usually has a theme based on what is ‘hot’ or currently of interest to those practicing emergency medicine. The conferences features general sessions, breakout sessions for discussion and usually runs two to three days. The larger conferences run by major university hospitals and E M associations and organizations will also have a web page dedicated to the conference, so interested possible participants or those who have already signed on can go to the page for current information on who is presenting, information on registration, sponsoring, exhibiting, places to stay and what special events will be presented. Handbooks and other material might also be available ahead of time on this web site page to prepare the emergency medical physician with the information and literature he or she will need ahead of time.

Emergency Medicine Conferences, as noted, will put much effort into presenting the latest technological advances in emergency medicine and often times trauma care. There are classes held at most conference that are set up classroom style, offering the physician the opportunity to learn and network with peers at the same time. The classes are also designed to give specialized training not only to emergency medicine physicians, but also to the staff that makes up an E M department including nurses, physician’s assistants, therapists and other emergency room personnel. Many times, these classes will be certified and those who attend and are still in training in some aspect of E M will receive credits for attending leader to greater certification credentials.

Keynote speakers and presenters at these events will be experts in the field of emergency medicine and trauma. They usually have impressive resumes and many publications dealing with E M and are the ideal presenters at an Emergency Medicine Conference.
